NOT ALL STEAM SHOWERS ARE THE SAME

There are two options in the marketplace to make a steam shower part of your home. At the bottom end of the spectrum are all-in-one, pre-built steam shower units. In this style of steam shower, all of the components are manufactured into one unit. The second type of steam shower are custom steam showers where the shower is built in-place and steam is one of the components added to the shower.

PRE-BUILT STEAM SHOWER UNITS

Wherever 3 or more components are added to a shower, CSA (and others who certify plumbing products) consider the unit an appliance which requires a separate class of certification. Invariably pre-built steam showers do not have this appliance certification.

Pre-built steam showers are typically only sold into the renovation market and not into new homes for the simple reason that renovations are not rigorously inspected like new homes. Pre-built steam showers are made of lighter weight materials with shorter life spans than the components we like to see in the bathrooms we renovate. For these reasons and because we are a mid to upper renovation company that cares about quality, we always build steam showers as an in-place, custom application versus a premanufactured one.

CUSTOM BUILT STEAM SHOWERS

Ensuring a long-lasting steam shower can be achieved by installing well-built products with great warranties and installing them correctly by qualified tradespeople. It is not the cheapest way to achieve a steam shower, but we believe it is the right way.

Our steam generators are typically supplied by Steamist or Kohler. Both manufacturers focus on quality and offer options like aroma and chroma (light) therapy.

Generator sizing is an important consideration both for optimal use and for the sake of longevity. A properly sized steam generator will make the difference between the enjoyable experience you are looking for in a steam shower versus a disappointing one both in the short term and long term as well.

Glass options in a steam shower are always a custom application which can be done in framed glass (to reduce cost) or heavier frame-less glass.

For shower walls, we suggest non-porous engineered stone panels like cultured granite or marble. These solid materials hold up against the effort steam exerts against surround materials. We have many residential steam showers installed throughout Edmonton as well as commercial steam showers some of which have been in operation for over 20 years. We are happy to provide references as required.

The Shower fixtures we offer have solid-bodied valves and quality showerheads. We choose them for their beauty but also for the same reasons we have mentioned before – they are able to stand up to steam and provide many years of problem-free service.

What does a steam shower cost in Edmonton?

Using quality products that last, a steam shower installed in Edmonton by qualified tradespeople will start in the $22,000 – $25,000 range and go up from there. Entry-level steam showers cost less but are less robustly made and often lack certifications, so we do not offer them. Factors that affect the cost of a quality steam shower are the size of the shower, glass thickness, fixtures, speciality options and materials chosen.

Are steam showers worth the investment?

Steam showers provide years of enjoyment and an improvement in quality of life. Many steam showers are available in the community to try at public pools and community gyms to help you determine if a steam shower is the right fit for you.

How long does it take to install a steam shower?

In general, the bulk of the work will be done in the first week which culminates with a glass template. Glass installation typically follows the template in 2 to 3 weeks. The shower can sometimes be used while awaiting glass with a temporary shower curtain if it is the only shower in the house.

Will you come out to quote?

Yes. Site measures follow a consult in our showroom where we open a file and gather together your wishlist.

Do you charge to quote?

Yes. Our quoting fees are modest and refunded into the project should you proceed with a renovation. Quoting fees vary depending on the scope of work and time of year. Call for details.
